Eclosion: New Work from NWAA, VISUAL FRINGE CALL FOR ENTRIES

Eclosion: New Work from NWAA
VISUAL FRINGE CALL FOR ENTRIES

New Wilmington Art Association has been selected to participate in this 2009 inaugural year of Fringe Wilmington—the city’s four-day celebration of contemporary and experimental art. The theme for this group exhibition is transformation—the transformation of downtown Wilmington, NWAA’s transformative activities, or the recent transformation of the political and economic atmosphere.

For October’s third Thursday closing event, NWAA will participate in Art21 Access ’09—an international screening initiative of the four episodes from season 5 of Art:21 – Art in the Twenty-First Century. On October 15, from 6 – 9pm, NWAA will screen Episode 3:Transformation and Episode 4: Systems. Transformation includes interviews with Yinka Shonibare MBE, Cindy Sherman, and Paul McCarthy. Each of these three artists observe, satirize, or reinvent characters from literature, history, art history, science, and popular culture. Julie Mehretu, John Baldessari, Kimsooja, and Allan McCollum are included in Systems, which examines work that conveys networks, structures, mapping, or information exchange today.

The theme of transformation will be evident in the work selected for this juried show and will offer the opportunity to discuss the intriguing and thought-provoking art produced both locally and internationally today.

Submit images and a proposal to new.wilmington.art@gmail.com by Friday, September 4. Juried selections will be made in consideration of space and consistency.

This event is part of Art21 Access '09, a celebration of contemporary art and Season 5 of Art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century sponsored by Art21. Art21 Access 09 is held at over 300 museums, schools, libraries, art spaces, and community centers and is organized in collaboration with Americans for the Arts' National Arts and Humanities Month.
