The Recession Proof Artist

Alexander Conner / Senior Curator @ Adaptation

Brookes Britcher and Alexander Conner of Adaptation were interviewed by the New York Times about the state of the arts in the recent economic downturn. This is an enormous honor for the small Philadelphia-based curatorial outfit. Alexander Conner was the focus of the Times story resulting in a video documentary titled " The Recession-Proof Artist". As New Wilmington Art Association works to improve conditions for emerging artists in downtown Wilmington, Alexander's story is an important reminder of the kind of artist that will benefit from the affordable rents at Shipley Lofts & the employment opportunities at a revitalized Queen Theater.

New Wilmington Art Association will be the first venue to host the Adaptation exhibition titled, All for One (Photograps 1977-2009) by Peter Capano. Spanning over 30 years, this work offers an unparalleled visual document of a volatile period in Philadelphia history. From the vantage point of a member, Peter Capano beautifully charts the lives and exploits of the 10th & Oregon gang with a sense of compassion and immediacy.

NWAA featured in the 2nd issue of The Papermachine

The Papermachine is a webzine devoted to covering the art and culture of the Delaware Valley, including Philadelphia and Northern Delaware. The father of the papermachine, Wes Doyle, recognizes that the arts community in our region is vibrant and diverse, worthy of both celebration and examination. It is the goal of the papermachine to provide insight into this world, which is often minimally recognized by traditional local media. Wes hopes that this project will shed a bit more light onto the scene, thus providing a platform for local artists to showcase their work, and opening the door for casual enthusiasts to become involved in all of the great things happening in the galleries, theaters, cafes, and performance spaces in our own backyard.
