LANGUAGE OF LINE

LANGUAGE OF LINE
4 West 5th Street, Wilmington, DE
November 5 - 30, 2009
Opening: Nov 6th, 6-9pm
Closing: Nov 19th, 6-9pm

“A line is a child’s first instrument of depiction, the boundary where one thing ends and another begins.” Language of Line compiles 8 artists using a primitive sense of line to build a larger more intricate composition. Line is explored in a drawing practice, transfer of information, tracing, painting, cutting, bending, forming, and repetition of linear qualities, exploring a range of mediums and practices.

Stephanie Beck utilizes cut paper referencing the grids and lines of city plans, while also carefully composing large scale drawings of aerial two dimensional line patterns of Philadelphia and neighboring regions. Beck’s beautifully layered intricate cut paper carefully pinned to the walls form depth and shadow. Andrew Wapinski presents the grid subtlety with his mixed media resin paintings. Wapinski contrasts the man made grids of metal leaf squares or spray paint against visceral organic lines and layers of pigments and acrylic. His gold leaf squares speak to Yves Klein, while his line of coal becomes a material “zip”, reminiscent of Barnett Newman.

Three artists work in process based drawing. Martin Brief meticulously traces the edges of the form from the text on each page of the dictionary with his ink on paper ongoing Dictionary Series. Although hand drawn, Brief’s work appears to be digitally produced due to its super clean minimal quality. Brian Patrick Franklin marries the concepts of sports and art with his Game Day Series. Franklin watches sporting events and traces the path of the ball to generate digital drawings, appearing like a computer generated Jackson Pollock drip painting. Zach Chupa also combines athletics with a drawing practice. Chupa produces simple line compositions on paper by mapping various running paths with a GPS device, in his Drun Compilation Series. The result is a small, minimal, refined process driven composition.

Beyond drawing a reference, artists work with line sculpturally. Anthony Cervino produces large-scale versions of plastic die cast scraps from toys and model kits. Blurring the line between mass-produced and hand made objects, Cervino’s Fleet mirrors the sensibility of the “ray gun” collection of Claes Oldenburg. Stephen Ruszkowski uses perspective lines of historic architecture and maps of the Delaware Valley region to create wall installations consisting of yarn and nails. The lines of yarn float off the wall expressing a paradox of permanence, disappearance and remembrance of structures and landscapes. Abby Donovan creates installations using low-tech materials such as wire, sculpey, tape, and clay to develop temporary site-specific material constructions questioning the urgency and absurdity of spaces and materiality. Her installations use altered symbols of language such as letters of the alphabet and arrows, creating organic forms of the once rigid lines transforming geometric spaces.

In a culture ‘devoted to the ordering of space’, the artists simply forgo the use of representation via abstraction, being more concerned with what things are more than what they look like to the eye’s camera.

Eclosion: New Work from NWAA

New Wilmington Art Association promotes exposure to contemporary art theory and practices through its unique guerrilla model. NWAA inhabits the raw storefront spaces on Market Street-literally on the "fringe" of Wilmington's commercial district. During the inaugural festival of Fringe Wilmington, NWAA continues its practice by presenting Eclosion. The theme of this group exhibition is transformation-the transformation of downtown Wilmington, NWAA's transformative activities, or the recent transformation in our political and economic atmospheres. This subject is evident in the work selected for the show and offers the opportunity to discuss the intriguing and thought-provoking art produced both locally and internationally today.

Art:21 Access '09

For October's third Thursday closing event, NWAA will participate in Art:21 Access '09-- an international screening initiative of Season 5 of Art:21--Art in the Twenty-First Century. On October 15th from 6-9pm, NWAA will screen Episode 3: Transformation and Episode 4: Systems. Transformation includes interviews with Yinka Shonibare MBE, Cindy Sherman, and Paul McCarthy. Each of these three artists observe, satirize, or reinvent characters from literature, history, art history, science, and popular culture. Julie Mehretu, John Baldessari, Kimsooja, and Allan McCollum are included in Systems, which examines work that conveys networks, structures, mapping, or information exchange today.

Boxed Water is Better

"The Arts As Prevention"

In 1983, when I arrived to settle in Wilmington, one of my first and most lasting observance was the sign at the entrance to a park in my new communitiy, which read, "Welcome to Wilmington...A Place to Be Somebody." After 26 years, I still feel that Wilmington is indeed "A Place to Be Somebody." Since 2001, I have collaborated with the "Stop the Violence Coalition." In my many workshops with young children, we participated in art activities. Most memorable, was a project in which I worked with over 40 children in the Tubman Garret Park, to paint a Banner, which we titled, "A Peaceful World Begins With Me." Many studies indicate that children who are involved in the arts at an early age, are less likely to be involved in violence and crimes. There is an ongoing need to provide a forum to engage children and adults on the street corners, in the arts. I am issuing the challenge to the NWAA, of which I recently became a member, to plan community projects in the Arts, to involve 'At Promise Youth" City youth. It should be noted that the term "At Risk Youth" is obsolete. They are not at risk, but "at promise." It is the "society" that places them at risk, by not engaging them in creative activities. It is my goal to see a program titled "The Arts As Prevention" come ALIVE in the City of Wilmington. We can do it! I already created a painting on the title "Arts As Prevention."

Fostering Diversity in Art Awareness

As a folk artist and educator, I see a great need to encourage awareness of diversity in art appreciation in the Wilmington Community. There is a perspective of art in the traditional context, i.e. the Brandywine painters. Most people tend to gravitate towards traditional art. However, there is a vast arry of art in our community that speak to life stories and issues, We need to educate art consumers to patronize the diversity in the art forms. -Eunice LaFate

EXPOSED! - Revealing Sources in Contemporary Art

Exposed! — Revealing Sources in Contemporary Art at the Delaware Art Museum

August 15, 2009 – October 4, 2009

Since the 1960s a wide range of artists—including Andy Warhol, Richard Prince, and Ellen Gallagher—have made pictures that reference specific works of art and popular culture. Displaying these paintings, prints, and photographs alongside images of their sources, Exposed! explores artistic strategies of quotation and appropriation. The featured works present various relationships to their sources, from respectful homage to cultural critique. The exhibition includes works of art by Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Richard Prince, Jeff Koons, Robert Colescott, Grace Hartigan, Ellen Gallagher, and Glenn Ligon, among others. Some pieces are from the Delaware Art Museum’s collection, and some are on loan from private collections.

The Recession Proof Artist

Alexander Conner / Senior Curator @ Adaptation

Brookes Britcher and Alexander Conner of Adaptation were interviewed by the New York Times about the state of the arts in the recent economic downturn. This is an enormous honor for the small Philadelphia-based curatorial outfit. Alexander Conner was the focus of the Times story resulting in a video documentary titled " The Recession-Proof Artist". As New Wilmington Art Association works to improve conditions for emerging artists in downtown Wilmington, Alexander's story is an important reminder of the kind of artist that will benefit from the affordable rents at Shipley Lofts & the employment opportunities at a revitalized Queen Theater.

The Recession Proof Artist- video by Jigar Mehta

New Wilmington Art Association will be the first venue to host the Adaptation exhibition titled, All for One (Photograps 1977-2009) by Peter Capano. Spanning over 30 years, this work offers an unparalleled visual document of a volatile period in Philadelphia history. From the vantage point of a member, Peter Capano beautifully charts the lives and exploits of the 10th & Oregon gang with a sense of compassion and immediacy.
