NWAA member, Ron Longsdorf held a live performance in Spartanburg, South Carolina Wednesday, September 29th, 5-8pm during the opening reception of Visual Fringe as part of the Wilmington Fringe Festival. During the year in Spartanburg, HUB-BUB Artist in Residence Ron Longsdorf will hold a series of performances nicknamed "Meals With Ron", yet officially titled Human Relation: Meal Series. The works are a means to investigate social human interactions using the meal as a platform. Ron will have a meal arranged with an unknown participant whom he has never met, have a meal, have conversation, and document the actions. Meal #1 will take place in the front window space of the Hub City Bookshop on Wednesday, September 29th, 2010 from 5 - 8 pm.

The entire performance will be broadcast live to the Chris White Gallery, Wilmington, Delaware via Skype as part of the Wilmington Fringe Festival. Table set up begins at 5pm, and the meal and interaction will begin after 5:30pm.

This program is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.

The GreaterRestonArtsCenter is requesting proposals for solo and/or group exhibitions for periods of approximately 4-6 weeks during the 2012 season.

GRACE's gallery is one of the most beautiful and flexible contemporary art spaces in the metropolitan area. With moveable walls and an open, hexagonal floor plan, the space is reconfigured for each show.

New this year - proposals will be accepted from artists living or working in a wider geographic area: Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia.

The concepts of "home", "place" and "destination" are explored through the diverse works of 11 American photographers from Philadelphia, Wilmington, New York City, Boston, Providence, Johnstown and Puerto Rico. Presented in the recently christened Shipley Lofts artist community in Wilmington, De, this exhibition offers a broad visual dialogue regarding how we envision, experience and create our sense of "home", in a venue discovering its own identity through its inhabitants.

Live musical performances by Technological Epidemic, The One and Only Matt Miller and members of the My Idea Of Fun collective (Johnstown, Pa) will highlight the Art-Loop re:fresh reception held from 9-10pm at the Chris White Gallery. Collectible artist books from many of the exhibitors will be available for purchase at the reception.

As part of wanderlust Boston-based artist Andrew Maydoney has installed Way-Finding, a traveling full-scale authentic Mongolian-built yurt, housing massive original cycloramic images of its temporary home, in Willingtown Square at the Delaware Historical Society & Museum, Wilmington, Delaware. We encourage visitors to come early to see this naturally lit piece before the evening light fades.

Manufactured Process: New Work by Allison Haug

NWAA member Allison Haug recieved a Delaware Divison of the Art Grant for 2010 in Visual Arts: Craft. She will be having a solo exhibition at the Mezzanine Gallery in the Carvel State Building (Wilmington,De) this September.

The opening reception will be held September 10th 5-8pm.

The exhibiton will run from September 9th through the 24th.

MICHAEL KALMBACH at the DELAWARE DIAMONDMAN TRIATHALON


Many members of the Wilmington & Philadelphia communities had the opportunity to swing at his best fastball in the streets of Wilmington during the May exhibition, The Rules for Staying Young. Over 3 hours and 250+ pitches later, he was still "dealing" to local youths as the streetlights on Market Street began to buzz in the fading evening light. Yet again, Michael Kalmbach is pushing his body to the limit with the arts in his heart.

Launching Active for the Arts, NWAA Director Michael Kalmbach will be competing in the Delaware DiamondMan Triathalon in Bear, De - Sunday September 12th, 2010.

An active Wilmington hockey player, Michael will swim 0.6 miles, bike 16.0 miles and run 2.0 miles in a rigorous personal effort to raise funds and awareness for the NWAA and its members.

The NWAA is currently accepting donations in any amount through Active for the Arts to sponsor Mr. Kalmbach at the Delaware DiamondMan Triathalon. All sponsorship directly contributes to continuing the activities of the New Wilmington Art Association (NWAA).

A two-part exhibition curated by Regine Basha The story of Sol LeWitt's exchanges with other artists is by now widely known. Though most artists engage in this process at one point or another, LeWitt seemed fully committed to it as an artistic code of conduct, a way of life. Eva Hesse, Robert Mangold, Hanna Darboven, and Robert Ryman are just a few of LeWitt's celebrated contemporaries with whom the artist exchanged works. Such exchanges were not limited to well-known artists, however: LeWitt consistently traded works with admirers whom he did not know but who had nevertheless sent their work to him, as well as amateur artists with whom he interacted in his daily life. LeWitt's exchanges—he responded to every work he received by sending back one of his own—fostered an ongoing form of artistic communion and, in some cases, a source of support and patronage. The Sol LeWitt Private Collection retains all of the works he received, as well as a record of what he offered in return.

For LeWitt, the act of exchange seemed to be not only a personal gesture, but also an integral part of his conceptual practice. In addition to encouraging the circulation of artworks through a gift economy that challenged the art world's dominant economic model, LeWitt's exchanges with strangers have the same qualities of generosity, and risk, that characterized his work in general. This kind of exchange was designed to stage an encounter between two minds, outside the familiar confines of friendship.

If we consider the process of exchange as another of Sol LeWitt's instructional pieces, then the rational (or irrational) thing to do is to continue to exchange work and ideas, if only symbolically, with him.

—This is a call to those who share an affinity with Sol LeWitt's legacy as a conceptual artist, to those who knew him and those who did not—to anyone who has ever wondered, "What would Sol LeWitt like?"

—Guidelines

Your gift to Sol LeWitt can take the form of an image, an object, a piece of music, or a film. Books, ephemera, and other non-perishable items (e.g. wine) are also welcome. Other ideas may be discussed with the curator.

2D contributions should be no larger than 8.5 x 11 inches; 3D contributions should be no larger than 12 x 12 x 12 inches.

All contributions will be exhibited at either Cabinet or MASS MoCA. The curator will notify you of the location of your contribution by 1 December 2010.

ArtScape MidWay III

I have an installation in this year's Artscape, July 16th-18th, the Charles Street Bridge, Baltimore.

The project will include small editioned artists zines/books, a Tea Dance, my dream studio, my new artist zine, some of my good friend's books, and probably the hottest weekend in July. With a photo copier on site, passerbyes or participants will create a small artist zine which will be editioned and get a taste of self-publishing and basically doing it yourself.
